Ford - New Engines Will Boost Fuel Economy

Want better fuel economy out of your Ford pickup truck? They've got you covered. Ford said it plans to rework the 2011 F-150 pickups, producing not one but four engines - including a turbocharged six-cylinder previously not available on its trucks.

Ford will also work on new tech that can drastically bring up fuel economy ratings.

The new Ford power train lineup includes a 3.7-liter V6, 5-liter and 6.2-liter V8s, and a 3.5-liter V6. The V6 will implement Ford's EcoBoost twin-turbo system to increase power while cutting fuel consumption.

Ford says the new engines, coupled with fuel-efficient six-speed transmissions, with result in a fuel economy boost of at least 20% across the range of F-150 models compared to 2010's models.

For real-world drivers, Ford's claims mean it will be possible to drive a pickup truck and get within striking distance of 25 miles per gallon on the highway.

The F-150 could be a breakthrough. Ford has battled the competition recently over whose trucks get better fuel economy, claiming 20 or 21 miles per gallon on the highway with V8 engines. Real world tests show it is difficult to break 18 MPG, can Ford be the first to accomplish this goal?
