The Ram-Red Wings Partnership: A Look at the Jimmy Howard Mural

You may have heard about the Red Wings partnership with Ram; the truck company holds an enhanced sponsorship with the Detroit hockey team which includes a special Detroit Red Wings Ram 1500 Express truck and several joint ad campaigns. The latest portion of this conglomeration is a Ram Truck-inspired mural of Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard inside Joe Louis arena.
David Arrigo, who also completed a painting of hockey icon Wayne Gretzy for the Hockey Hall of Fame, is the artist of the new mural. Arrigo is famous in the NHL for his goalie designs, so it should come as no surprise that his mural of Howard is a straight-on look at the goalie in action, mask included. Surrounding the goalie are the words "Guts" and "Glory"- two key words of the new Ram marketing campaign, along with a Ram symbol. The mural announces Ram as the "Official Truck" of the team. Arrigo painted the mural from November 9-12, 2011 with hundreds of on-lookers present during active hockey games at the Detroit arena. Arrigo recently described his painting process RamZone.com. He says, "We projected the image on the wall with an overhead projector and first I sketched it in. I look at it as a big paint by numbers. I don't see eyes, I see shapes and colors, and do them piece by piece. There are nine colors in the jersey, fifteen in his face."1
