Chrysler to Add a New Body Shop at Sterling Heights Plant

It's tough to think that the Sterling Heights plant was struggling only two years ago. In 2009, the American automaker didn't even incorporate the Sterling Heights manufacturing facility into their restructuring plans. Today, Sterling Heights is where the Chrysler 200 and Avenger are built. It's also the plant in which Chrysler has just guaranteed to provide $165 million to construct, a cutting-edge, brand new art body shop. This is on top of the $850 million paint shop that the American automaker committed to building in December of last year.
"Last year, Chrysler made the decision to continue operating the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant indefinitely," says General Holiefeild, VP, UAW. "Today, the plant is thriving with 900 new employees and additional investment that recognizes the commitment and dedication of this highly-skilled workforce toward building a successful Chrysler Group."1
The acronym UAW represents the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agriculture Implement Works of America. It is one most the most diverse and well-known unions representing workers in North America.
Coinciding with Chrysler's announcement of the new body shop, 26,000 UAW represented Chrysler workers began voting on a new four-year labor contract. In an early proposal, Chrysler promised to invest $4.5 billion and create over two-thousand jobs.
In conclusion, Chrysler will be adding 2,000 new jobs, a new paint shop, a new body shop, and more than $5 billion in investments. It looks as though Chrysler is out to show Americans that yes, the Underdog can make a comeback ...and will win in the end.
